Multiple Teams · Former Cougar Brax Garrett Signs MLB Contract

Former Northview pitcher Brax Garrett, who played for the Cougars in 2012 and is the son of former Northview coach Steve Garrett, signed with the Miami Marlins on Friday, the deadline for him to sign.

The left-handed pitching Garrett, who played at Foley and Florence in the last four years after leaving Northview, was the No. 7 pick in the June 9 draft. He signed a reported $4.145 million signing bonus, according to MLB.com’s Jim Callis. That figure is above the projected bonus for the No. 7 pick of $3.756 million, according to MLB’s draft slotting system.

Alabama’s 2015 Mr. Baseball winner, Garrett, who is represented by agent Scott Boras, would have attended Vanderbilt University had he not signed with the Marlins.

The deal won’t be final until he passes his physical. Garrett was in Miami Friday for the physical. He was the last of the top 10 draft picks to sign.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pounder had a 6-2 record, a 0.53 ERA with 131 strikeouts and only 15 walks in 65 1/3 innings this past season at Florence.

While at Northview as an eighth grader, Garrett registered a 4-2 record and one save in 48 innings pitched, posting a 3.22 ERA. He struck out 58, scattered 41 hits and walked 19 while in a Cougar uniform.

In his junior season when he was named Mr. Baseball, he finished with a 7-1 record, a 0.75 ERA and 141 strikeouts and only 11 walks in 66 2/3 innings.

Garrett was named to several All-American teams this past year, including Baseball America, MaxPreps and USA Today.
